Imerys is pleased to announce that, as of today – 13 November 2024, it has bought out all minority interests in Imerys British Lithium and now has full ownership of the company, which aims to produce enough high-quality lithium carbonate to power 500,000 electric vehicles every year, before the end of the decade.
This decision further strengthens the Group’s position in the developing European lithium market and is in line with its ambition to contribute to the UK and European energy transition by supplying lithium to its electric vehicle battery value chain.
Guillaume Delacroix, Senior Vice President Performance Minerals EMEA & APAC at Imerys and Chairman of Imerys British Lithium Ltd explains:
“We are excited about this new step for the Imerys British Lithium project. The Joint Venture we started in June 2023 was an important transition period, and it’s now time to move the project through its next stages of development and to full scale.
“Imerys British Lithium aims to be at the forefront of commercial lithium production in Cornwall. Our mine and processing plant on Imerys’ land will allow us to produce a local supply of this vital component for the UK battery market – with minimal impact on the surrounding area.
“This project will bring hundreds of new jobs to mid-Cornwall and significant investment, we are dedicated to delivering wide-reaching socio-economic benefits to the area – whilst maintaining the longstanding Imerys’ environmental guardianship.”
